126 citizens together with 150 eye witnesses filed a law suit against the Greek Police and the Minister for Citizens’ Protection, Christos Papoutsis, for the use of violence during the mass protests at Syntagma Square on June 15th, 28th and 29th, 2011. The law suit complains about ‘unprovoked and murderous use violence, excessive use of tear gas and other chemicals’.
The lawsuit is directed personally against the Minister of Citizens’ Protection, Christos Papoutsis, Health Minister Andreas Loverdos, the Chief of Police, prosecutors, riot police squads and other police units that participated in the incidents. The law suit was submitted on Monday.
According to news portal news247.gr, such lawsuits submitted by victims of police violence are rejected on grounds that the perpetrators can not be traced.
The excessive use of violence and tear gas during the mass protests in Athens in June triggered a outcry with the police apologizing in public. One journalist lost completely his hearing sense after a stun grenade exploded right next to him.
