Famous musician Mikis Theodorakis sounded really angry when I saw him on television. “We have to do something, the youth is absent! We have to set up tents in the area and music stages where people can come and go, exchange ideas and enjoy”. Theodorakis was featuring the Resistance and Creativity Festival against the sale of public assets at the abandoned area of the old Athens airport (Hellinikon) in the south coast of Athens. A festival that is taking place during the whole month of September. A former resistance fighter during the German occupation period and the military dictatorship, a former politician and minister, the 86-year-old feels still too young to give up activism.
An event with the title “Hellinikon is Not for Sale” will take place on Friday, September 16th 2011, with Theorodakis’ Popular Orchestra and singers such as Dimitris Basis, Sofia Papazoglou, Panagiotis Petrakis, Katerina Papoutsakis and the participation of Alkinoos Ioannidis and Dora Bakopoulou.
Mikis Theodorakis will deliver a speech before the concert.
The event is supported by the municipalities of Argyroupolis, Alimos and Glyfada, who are in favor of establishing a Metropolitan Park at the old airport.
The festival program also includes an exhibition of 130 visual artists, films, theatre performances and public debates.
The event and the concert take place at the Fencing building. On Friday the event will start at 8 pm. Entrance is free.
The 1,500-acres area of the old airport was supposed to be given to investors from Qatar to build a fancy Las Vegas-style monster.
