Despite the rain, farmers from the area of Patras brought four tons of potatoes, lettuce, cabbage and fresh eggs and ditributed them to the residents of the city in Western Greece.
The farmers decided to launch this symbolic action in order to protest the fact that they have not received yet compensations for damages they had suffered and therefore they are forced to sell their products at ridiculously low prices. The local producers settled at the Agios Georgios Square at 9 o’ clock in the morning.
The free distribution of agricultural products has been a frequent phenomenon in the last month. Farmers have distributed vegetables and potatoes in Athens and Thessaloniki.

In most other nations, farming isn’t a risk free business, with the government generously covering all damages. And Greece can’t afford that anymore, too. The farmers will have to adjust to the different times. They should look for other ways to make up the shortfall, there are still opportunities for enterprising guys. For instance, Greece imports a surprisingly high amount of vegetables and fruits, so the domestic market isn’t saturated yet. And high quality olive oil is sold at bargain prices to Italian brands (which resell it as “made in Italy”). Farmers should start a cooperative that markets their oil as a premium Greek product asap! Why leave the profits to the Italians?
there are indeed cooperatives in greece, but not very successful in marketing their products abroad. Blame some local mentalities here.
Grr. I just wrote a lengthy response, but forgot to do the math, and because of effing WordPress my comment is gone now. Isn’t there an add-on for the blog software to prevent this, keeptalkinggreece? Please.
unfortunately the math’s purpose is to scare spammers. what’s an add-on?
