Merkel Calls Greek President: Get a Functioning Gov’ ASAP

German Chancellor Angela Merkel called Greek President Karolos Papoulias on Friday morning. Although the content of their conversation has not been officially revealed, German officials made public the tone of the phone call. “We hope the country will get a functioning government right after the [June] elections,” Merkel told Papoulias according to government spokesman in Berlin, Greek and international media report from the German capital.

Chancellor Angela Merkel called for a stable Greek government to be formed quickly after new elections in a telephone call with President Carolos Papoulias on Friday, a German government spokesman said.

“The chancellor had a telephone conversation on Friday morning with Mr Papoulias,” deputy government spokesman Georg Streiter told a regular news conference here.

“She repeated the German position that we are waiting for the elections and that it is the wish of all European partners and also of Germany that a government is formed as quickly as possible after these elections,” he said.

Streiter declined to offer more details, saying the conversation was ‘confidential’.

He played down the call, saying that the pair would undoubtedly have several similar conversations in the future, as they had in the past. (AFP ).

 A day earlier, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle called his Greek counterpart, interim FM Petros Moliviatis,  “We stand by Greece” but Athens “must do its homework,” according to a foreign ministry spokesman, speaking at a regular government news conference on Friday.

A spokeswoman from the finance ministry declined to comment on market rumors that the ECB is preparing an emergency plan in the event of a Greek exit from the euro. Asked whether the finance ministry was drafting emergency measures, she cited comments by Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble, saying: “Our citizens expect us to be prepared for every eventuality”

Whether the German side asked for a stable or a functioning government, we will know after President Papoulias briefs caretaker Prime Minister Pikrammenos who he will brief the political leaders and they will most likely brief the journalists…
