Powerful Earthquake 6R Shakes Greek Islands and SW Turkey

 A powerful earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale occurred at 03:44 p.m. on Sunday in the sea area between the Greek islands of Rhodes and Kastelorizo and the Turkish South-Western  coast. The Seismologic Institute Kandili in Istanbul/Turkey gave the earthquake intensity with 6.1R. There were no deaths but some injuries and minor material damage.

According to Athens Geodynamic Institute the intensity was 5.8R, according to Euro-Mediterranean Isntitute with 6R.

The earthquake was of some a duration and sent people to the streets on both side of the South-Eastern Mediterranean Sea.

In Turkey seven people got injured due to panic and were transferred to hospitals. There were minor material damages.

In Rhodes too people rushed out of their homes, no injuries or damages have been reported.

The Athens Geodynamic Institute says the quake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.8 struck at a depth of 37 kilometers (23 miles) in the Aegean Sea at 3:44 p.m. (1244 GMT) Sunday. That is between the Greek island of Rhodes and western Turkey.

Turkey’s Kandilli Observatory gave a stronger preliminary magnitude of 6.1, with aftershocks of 6 and 4.9. Areas of Turkey shaken by the quake included the popular Aegean resort town of Oludeniz, the Aegean port of Izmir, and the Mediterranean city of Antalya.

Police in Rhodes said there are no reports of injuries or damage.

No serious casualties were reported in Turkey either, but state TV said some people hurt themselves while panicking in the reaction to the temblor. The TV report provided no details about their injuries or the number of victims.

These regions of Greece and Turkey are in seismically active areas and suffer frequent earthquakes. (AP)

    • Nope, they aren’t. There isn’t any “entitlement”. The bailouts are an act of European welfare, they aren’t part of any EU or Eurozone contracts (quite to the contrary, there is a rule prohibiting automatic bailouts!). Beggars don’t have a right to other people’s money, neither. Those who become a nuissance will find their hats empty.
