This that did not happened a couple of weeks ago, occurred on Thursday morning. Riot Police fired tear gas against protesting policemen, firefighters and coastal guards.
Riot Police vs Protesting Police
According to Greek media, the unionists had formed a human chain outside the Maximos Mansion in order to prevent the meeting of the three coalition government partners, Samaras, Venizelos and Kouovelis. A meeting that was scheduled to take place at 1:00 pm.
Tension rose between police and police rose when a riot police squad tried to prevent them from nearing the Prime Minister’s office.
“Protect those who protect you”
The tension was apparently …dissolved with the limited usage of tear gas and some clubs. Protesters are still outside the PM’s office.
That was a brave -or reckless – decision taken by Finance Minister Yiannis Stournaras. He decided to walk from the Prime Minister’s office to the Finance Ministry. At a time, when the area in between was full of seamen and metalworkers protesting the current and the upcoming austerity measures.
Protesters reacted with loud “Boos” and shouted to FinMin’s direction some very common Greek expressions in …French. The most polite slogans to be heard were “hustlers” and you drive us to squalor”.
