Athens: Fights Erupt Between Hoodies and Students, 2 Injured

Fights erupted between members of PASOK affiliated students’ union and people wearing hoods during the celebrations of the 39th anniversary of Polytechnic University Uprising in 1973. Greek media report that the students’ group was attacked by a 15-member group wearing hoods and helmets.

The hoodies reportedly attacked the students with batons, injuring one of them on the head. The student was rushed to the hospital. Some websites report also from a second injured student.

Tension rose again after a while when the hoodies forced student groups outside the yard of the University.

For reasons not known yet, the whole situation got out of control with different students groups to start throwing chairs and tables against each other.

On Thursday, the traditional 3-day celebrations to remember the victims of the Students’ Uprise started with an exhibition and crowds of people visiting the university premises.

The festivities end with a protest march towards the American Embassy on November 17th.

  1. Any idea on who the “hoodies” are? Am I wrong to suspect Golden Dawn’s hand in this?

  2. I recall that last year or the year before, pasok-students with helmets and sticks attacked the november17th protests. could be related…

  3. Angry municipality workers attacking members of the German delegation and harassing German Consul and fights between members of PASOK affiliated students’ union and hoodies: two sides of the same coin. And that coin is the violent streak that is part and parcel of Greek society. No, not like some like to make you believe, just something since the crisis started. It’s something very old and almost ancient.
