Athens: Pushing and shouting for a free bag of vegetables, one injured

Incredible scenes with pushing and shouting took place outside the Agricultural Ministry in Athens, when farmers distributed fruits and vegetables free of charge. Dozens of low-pensioners, jobless and citizens in economic difficulties raised their hands begging for a bag of free food.

Video:

Tension and frustration were high, when the farmers started to hand out bags full of vebetables and fruits from a truck to the crowd. “If there’s no order, people would be trampled,” citizens shouted with farmers shouting “Back! Back!”

Despite the efforts to avoid the worst, a man was pushed to the ground and fell down injuring his head. An ambulance provided him with first aid.

Athenians formed long queues to get a bag of vegetables and fruits distributed by protesting farmers free of charge. Farmers set up a spontaneous open market outside the Agricultural Ministry at Vathis Square on Wednesday morning.

Producers of agricultural products who are at the same time sellers at the country’s open markets organized this action to demand reduction of production cost.

They want price reduction in fuel and electricity,  reduction of Value Added Tax for farming machinery, tools and agricultural products and exemption of having to work with a cash register.

PS to tell you the truth these scenes remind me of refugees in war zones trying to get aid distribution.*sigh*
