That was a real surprise for all those who went to Vouliagmeni beach to enjoy a sea swim on Monday morning. They had to be evacuated when a bather found a military shell from World War II and thus at the bottom of the sea very close to the beach. Near the lifeguard tower.
Some media even reported that the bather carried the shell to the beach.
Immediately the beach managers called the police and the coast guard, while special units of the army arrived to defuse the shell.

The beach was evacuated and remained closed all through the day. Officially, the reason for closing the beach access to public was “technical problem”.
Vouliagmeni is some 25 km south-east of Athens.
