While the countdown for an US-led operation against Syria has started, Greece reassures its NATO allies, it was ready to assist in an operation against the Assad regime.
“Greece is ready to fulfill its obligations,” deputy Prime Minister Evangelos Venizelos (PASOK) told the press after a meeting with Defence Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos (Nea Dimocratia) on Thursday.
Greek media report that there has been no official request for a participation of Greece so far.
Greece is expected to contribute in anti-Assad campaign by allowing access to allied ships and aircraft to make use of the naval and air base in Souda. Both bases were used in the operation against Gaddafi in Libya.
Anti-war activists are already organizing protests at Souda on the North-West of Crete.
PS Greece cannot turn down any NATO or USA request. However clever Greeks should bargain with a third bailout without additional austerity measures.
