145,000 Greek school children in need of free meals

The economic collapse continues to threaten Greek households, with many families not being able to feed their children. Malnutrition reportedly affects more and more children, the number could be more than 100,000.

According to daily Eleftheros Typos, 975 schools across the country have applied to be included into the program of state subsidized free meals.  Τhe number of schools corresponds to approximately 145,000 schools children, says the Institute of Preventive Medicine, Environmental and Occupational Health”Prolepsis” (Prevention) that runs the free meals program.

According tot the institute, in the first year of the program in 2013, 500 schools had applied, but now their number has doubled. For 2014 the program is expected to cover 320 and 50,000 school children.

PS Of course, not all students in every class room are evenly affected by the economic crisis, not all students in a school are threatened by malnutrition. Of course, free meals cannot be given only to school class children with certified poverty and need. But in schools in areas with high unemployment or in poor suburbs malnutrition can affect more and more children…
