Forty-five mostly students, members of left-wing SYRIZA youth section have been detained during a protest at the office of maritime Minister Miltiadis Varvitiotis on Thursday morning. While the protesters blame the police for ‘attacking them without reason’, reporters and also a SYRIZA lawmaker and the mayor of Komotini claim that they were beaten and harassed by the police.
The minister’s personnel claims that a group of protesters “in obviously aggressive mood” tried to occupy the minister’s office. “They were aggressively pushing the door for quite some time,” a Varvitsiotis’ employee told the media.
The protesters insist that they wanted only to distribute some leaflets condemning the drowning of 12 migrants and demanding a thorough investigation of the issue.
Based on survivors testimonies, several migrants and refugees groups, the UNHCR incl, blame the Greek coast guard for the tragedy where 12 women and children were drown in the cold waters of the Aegean Sea and demand an independent and thorough investigation. The coast guard and the minister deny any responsibility.
