Ballot boxes closed at 7 p.m. on Sunday with a shock for coalition government of Nea Dimokratia and PASOK. The Exit polls show a precedence of SYRIZA candidates in Greece’s biggest municiaplity Athens and biggest prefecture Attica. Exit polls overturn the results of recent public opinion polls.
Exit polls:
Athens mayor: Gavriil Sakelarides (SYRIZA) 20%-24%
Giorgos Kaminis (current mayor, supported by PASOK/Democratic Left) 18%-23%
Attica prefecture: Rena Dourou (SYRIZA) 27%-31% Yiannis Sgouros (current prefect, supported by PASOK) 20.5%-24.5%
Piraeus: Yiannis Moralis (ship- & Olympiakos owner Marinakis) 33.5%-37.5% Vasilis Michaloliakos (current mayor -Nea Dimocratia) 28%-32%
Thessaloniki: Yiannis Boutaris (current mayor, suppoerted by PASOK/DemLeft) 35.7%-39.7% Stavros Kalafatis (Nea Dimocratia) 24.1% – 28.1%
In the majority of Greece’s 51 municipalities and 13 regional sections, this is the first round of municipality and regional elections.
