Conservative EPP MEPs consider Greek coalition as “extremist government”?

Huh? Conservatives in the European Parliament consider SYRIZA’s junior coalition partner Independent Greeks (ANEL) as “extremist” and the whole coalition as “extremist government”?  They mean, they have to intervene because ANEL-leader and Greece’s Defense Minister Panos Kammenos took an helicopter and threw a commemoration wreath in the Aegean Sea as “historic confrontation with Turkey? And they want to mount a censure motion against ‘extremist’ Greek cabinet?

“Kammenos on Friday took a helicopter flight close to the Turkish coast, prompting fighter jets to scramble on both sides of a historic confrontation.

Weber, from Germany’s Christian Social Union, said of the incident: “That’s crazy and we have to talk about this.”

Manfred Weber is leader of the centre-right European People’s Party (EPP), the biggest political group in the European Parliament.

Describing the new coalition as “an extremist government”, he said he believed the European Parliament should rally behind a position that this was unacceptable.” (euractive.com)

EU issues biggest website EURACTIVE has the full story and reminds of a similar motion against right-populist Joerg Haider from Austria 15 years ago:

“Conservatives in the European Parliament want the Assembly to vote next week to condemn a right-wing party in Greece’s new leftist-led coalition government, comparing it to an EU rebuke to Austria 15 years ago. But opposition on the left may thwart any resolution.

Manfred Weber, leader of the centre-right European People’s Party (EPP), the biggest political group in the European Parliament, said on Tuesday (3 February) he would press the Assembly to back a motion of censure against the right-wing Independent Greeks party.

The motion would be similar to that passed in 2000 when Joerg Haider’s far-right Austrian People’s Party was brought into a conservative-led coalition in Vienna.

That resolution called Haider “xenophobic and racist” and demanded EU leaders place the Austrian government under strict supervision to ensure it abided by human rights treaties.

On January 30, Panos Kammenos took a helicopter and flew over the Aegean Sea near to Imia islet. He threw a wreath in the sea to mark the anniversary of the 1996 stand-off over Imia islet with Turkey. This prompted a tension between the two neighboring countries, with Ankara sending two F-16 fighter jets. Kammenos’ initiative led to several phones calls between Foreign and Defense Ministries of both countries to diffuse the tension.

PS I didn’t know that Bavarian CSU had hart warming ties with Turkey… lol
