A ceremony is taking place Thursday morning to swear in the 300 newly elected lawmakers. Greek MPs have to choice to take a religious (Greek Orthodox and Muslim) or a political oath that is held for the first time in the Parliament after a request of the SYRIZA-led coalition government.
The ceremony started with several bishops and the Archbishop of Greece Ieronymus to read the religious oath.
Right after, one Muslim MP was sworn-in. The political oath followed.
After the elections of January 25th, the Parliament consists at 45% of new members, i.e. 139 MPs.
SYRIZA has 67 new lawmakers.
Only 69 MPs are women.
Among those who were sworn-in were also the MPs from neo-nazi Golden Dawn, currently in custody awaiting trial on charges for establishing a criminal organization.
Business as usual: 105 SYRIZA MPs without a tie
Government: SYRIZA (149) – Independent Greeks (13 seats) = total 162 seats in a parliament of 300.
Absolute Majority in Parliament is 151 votes.

Next task of the Parliament is to elect the country’s next President. The name of EU Commissioner for Migration Dimitris Avramopoulos (Nea Dimokratia) is tipped off but nothing official yet.
