Greece sends neo-nazi Golden Dawn on trial, April 20, i.e. Hitler’s birthday

Somebody must have a real grotesque sense of humor or just wanted to send a powerful message against racism. After almost 18 month in custody, several members of Greece’s neo-nazi and ultra-right Goldwn Dawn will stand trial on April 20th 2015. “April 2o? That is, a day before the colonels’ coup d’ etat launched on April 21st 1967?,” a Greek would wonder. Well… Yes. And yet it comes even worse: “April 20th is the birthday of Adolf Hitler!” an expat friend stressed on Twitter. Was the trial set accidentally or after a well-thought examination in order to send a powerful message against racism? I want to bet o the second option.

Howsoever, Golden Dawn used to celebrate the birthday of the man who drawn Europe in rivers of blood, anyway.

Golden Dawn leader Nikos Michaloliakos and more than a dozen top party officials and MPs were arrested on charges of founding and participating in a criminal organization following the killing of an anti-fascism rapper in 2013 by a party supporter.

The party denies the allegations and says the defendants are victims of a political witch-hunt. If found guilty, they face up to 20 years in prison.

The stabbing shocked Greece and triggered nationwide protests leading to a government-led crackdown on the party, which entered parliament for the first time in 2012 as it tapped into voter anger over the collapsing economy.

Under Greek law, suspects can only be held for 18 months before a case comes to court. As a result, Mihaloliakos and senior lawmaker Christos Pappas are due to be released from detention in the coming weeks, ahead of their trial.

A total of 70 people will face trial, including all of the 16 lawmakers Golden Dawn had in the previous parliament, which was dissolved for a Jan. 25 snap election.

Thirteen of the lawmakers were re-elected, including Mihaloliakos and Pappas, along with four new members, making Golden Dawn the joint third largest party in parliament. [Reuters]

In an article I am reading it says that Golden Dawn is largely supported by Greek capitalists, the government & the church, as a wilful thug against militants, workers & the poor & that more than 1/2 the police force vote for this openly neo-Nazi party.
Great – it all sounds good – what can I say – I didn’t know – it is funny how one assumes that the freedoms that exist in their country are equally practiced else where.
I am allowed to speak freely in Australia – I comment on political issues here – I contact my local, state & federal members as well as commenting on media articles – I speak my mind & can get scathing at times, some reply & some don’t &/but, no one has said boo yet – lucky me.

Has anyone watched the movie Green Street Hooligans ?

    • That was the second murder in 3 months. After more than 2 years of ruling the streets with clubs and knives.

They are supported not only by wealthy backers but the instrumental right arm of New Democracy PM Samaras and his inner coterie of Dendias, Voridis, Georgiadis etc. That is why ND has to get its act together and re-invent itself as a centre right, not far right extremist party.

When Varoufakis et al warn about the danger of fascism they do not only mean GD but its far more powerful backers.
