Obama calls Tsipras, talks about Refugee & Debt crisis, Cyprus

Us President Barack Obama had a phone conversation with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Thursday.According to a White House press release, Obama called Tsipras to congratulate him for his Elections success on September 20th.

The two leaders discussed Greece’s reforms to achieve debt sustainability, the Syrian refugee crisis, and efforts to bring about a successful resolution to talks on Cyprus, the White House said in a statement.

On the refugee crisis and the Cyprus issue, Obama and Tsipras reportedly stressed the importance of working together with neighboring Turkey.

Citing a written statement by the White House representative, Mega TV correspondent in Washington reports that President Obama told Tsipras that “the USA aspire to work with the new Greek government that takes steps to implement the necessary reforms, return to growth and achieve sustainability within the Eurozone, including  agreement on debt relief with creditors.

Obama President also promised “solidarity with Greece and the EU in their response to the extraordinary increase of refugees and immigrants and reaffirmed the US commitment to help the Syrians and others in need of humanitarian assistance. “

The statement said that the two leaders agreed on the importance of cooperation with Turkey on these challenges “including efforts to successfully resolve the Cyprus settlement talks

Two days ago, Greek media reported that Tsipras would have the chance to meet Obama on the sideline of the United Nations General Assembly on Sunday and discuss further the debt issue. However, according to White House sources, Tsipras is not on the list of leaders to have a meeting with Obama.

There is still chance that the two leaders could have a brief meeting at the reception of the UN.

The USA is Greece’s friend and supporter in the debt crisis…
