A wooden boat carrying refugees from Turkey to Greece capsized off the island of Farmakoni in the eastern Aegean Sea on Tuesday evening. The boat had reportedly 50 people on board. So far the bodies of 12 people have been recovered: six children, two women and four men. They were trapped in the boat cabin.
Another 12 people are reportedly missing in the cold waters.
According to media, the Frontex received a call via the European Emergency phone number. The Greek coast Guard rushed to the area and managed to rescue 26 people. Two children were transported to the hospital of Samos island with a Super Puma helicopter.
A Search & Rescue operation is still underway to locate the missing people.
