Varoufakis’ fans across Europe, get ready! The former Finance Minister of Greece, Yanis Varoufakis plans to form a political party, a pan-european movement, as of February 2016.
In an interview to Italian weekly magazine L’ Espresso, Varoufakis revealed his plans saying that his aim is to “democratize Europe.”
Varoufakis said he wants to show European voters that there is a third way between a return to the nation state and the “undemocratic structures” of today’s European institutions, according to a preview of the interview.
Varoufakis also argues that “draconian” nature of the measures lenders offered to Greece in the summer was aimed at preventing left-wing Podemos from winning Spain’s elections.
Yanis Varoufakis served as Greece’s Finance Minister from end of January to beginning of July 2015. He was celebrated by international and national media as a “superstar”. His ‘revolutionary’ and controversial negotiation strategy and his relaxed style during negotiations with lenders had some conservative circles of Europe (Schaueble, Dijsselbloem) to have demanded his replacement in spring.
Varoufakis’ main strategy failure was that he wanted to persuade the Eurogroup that the Eurogroup and the European Central Bank and All-that-Euro mechanisms had to modify their policies. Unfortunately, the Euro finance Ministers were not students in a university class, but men in black suits that wouldn’t understand a good joke.
Yanis left the government right after the Referendum after disagreement with PM Tsipras over Greece’s economic future policies also withdrew his support for SYRIZA.
PS the revolution that failed…
If I were Greek I would vote for Varoufakis, he is the only person with vision…..
Who gives a SH*T!
Hmm. Just to correct your summation… The problem was not that the Eurogroup were “not students in a unversity class”. Clearly, had they been such they would have been expelled for ignorance and stupidity. No, the real problem was that they had no interest in admitting their failed policies, nor in assisting Greece to make any economic recovery. The fact that approximately 100% of economists worldwide who are not German or of German descent think that the eurozone policies are completely loopy does not concern them in the slightest: they hold political power and anyone who dares to disagree can go fuck himself.
Does Varoufakis really think that anyone remembers him today – he had his chance in the sun & he blew it – let go Yanni – move on man – there is life after political death.
Some people just don’t know when to go –
