Energy high on the agenda, when Russian President Putin visits Greece on May 28/2016

A visit with heavy political weight. Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected in Athens on May 28th 2016. Expectations in bothe countries are high, with Russia to eye a partner in promoting its new geopolitical strategy and Greece to try to use the “Russian card” as a pressure tool in the critical negotiations with its lenders.

According to Greek media, Putin will seeks to promote a new pipeline for the transport of Russian gas through Bulgaria and Greece to Italy and to revive the underwater pipeline Greek-Italian Interconnection Plan (IGI).

In exchange Russia will support the Greek privatization program, especially in the energy sector, and will reactive the interest of Russian companies for the privatization of public natural gas and fuel companies (DEPA, ELPA). Furthermore, the Russians have interest in the privatization of Public Power Company (DEH), the port of Thessaloniki and TRAINOSE.
