Financially broke and homeless, a man kills himself in Athens Home for Elderly

A 73-year-old man shot and killed himself in the Athens Nursing Home for Elderly in the night of Wednesday to Thursday. The man was financially broke due to the economic crisis and homeless. He was allowed to live in the Nursing home after a decision of the board of directors. It is a mystery where and how he obtained the gun.

The man reportedly left a notice reading:
“Apologies. I don’t blame anyone. I don’t want that my daughter learn anything about.”
Having written this simple and dramatic notice, the man took the gun, put it on his haw and pulled the trigger.
It seems that nobody heard the gunshots.

Speaking to NewsIt.gr, the President of the Foundation said that the man was financially broke due to the economic crisis. He had undertaken some work by the state but had failed to deliver. The President said that he could not understand how the man came to possession of the gun.
According to Greek media, the gun was a riffle and that the man had taken it with him when he moved in the Home.
The man had moved with his few belongings to the Nursing Home two months ago. He was not a regular resident, but he was allowed to stay there after a decision of the board of directors.
Police investigates the case.
Suicides in Greece dramatically increased since the beginning of the economic crisis. Cracked by the burden and unable to deal the problems, they take their lives and leave behind children, wives, husbands, relatives and friends.
That I do not report so frequently as in the past about this tragic phenomenon, it doesn’t mean that it does not exist.
