“The outcome of the British referendum confirmed our insistence on the need of a democratic binding discussion about the future of the EU, to enhance the social functioning and democratization of structures so that it operates in serving the people of Europe and in being appealing to societies of Member-States,” Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias said in a statement.
He expressed concern over “the developments of recent years and particularly in relation to the refugee problem and the growing trends to fragment the European Union,” and stressed “the need to combat nationalism and extreme behaviors.”
Kotzias noted that “priority of European leaders must be to abandon punitive logic and political entrenchment and to cultivate a culture of democratic dialogue and consensus.”
