The two were reportedly carrying false IDs, but they identified by the antiterror police due to the arrest warrants against them. The car was stolen from a suburb in Athens last June.

The warrant on Sakkas was issued after he failed to report to his police station in Piraeus a few days ago as part of his conditional release from jail. He stands accused of participation in the Conspiracy of the Cells of Fire urban guerrilla group.

The 32-year-old self-proclaimed anarchist has denied any connection with the terrorist group, though he has admitted to being on “friendly terms” with some of its members.

Marios Seisidis, his brother Simos and a man identified as Grigoris Tsironis are wanted over seven bank robberies committed and attempted almost a decade ago.

Both suspects are in the custody of the counterterrorism unit for questioning.

Investigators probing the activities of Conspiracy of the Cells of Fire, suspected of being behind at least 11 bombings of high-profile targets, believe the group funded its anti-establishment actions by committing bank robberies.

Greek police and anti terror department continue investigation to locate potential accomplices of the two arrestees.
