One of the messages in the latest WikiLeaks publication of Hillary Clinton emails is a July 2015 request from John Podesta, a close Clinton ally who is now Hillary’s campaign chairman, to the office of Bill Clinton, asking him to pressure Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras into accepting the European Union’s debt deal.
At that time John Podesta was Conselor to President Barack Obama.
As published by Wikileaks, Podesta’s message sent on 10. July 2015 read as follows:
i’m on a train and hard to talk by phone. White House asked me whether WJC had enough of a relationship with PM Tsipras to call him and counsel him to make a deal. Can you ask him whether that’s in the realm of possibility. If yes, I can talk to him after I’m off the train and explain their thinking and what they are hoping to accomplish. Thanks.
“WJC” is William Jefferson Clinton, the former President. The reply from Mr. Clinton’s office was prompt and said:
He says yes, but he’d need a lot more info than he has now. His immediate question is – are we pushing Merkle too? What time will you be available to talk? They have Charlotte, so just need to be able to give a heads up
“Merkle” is a misspelling of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s last name.
Podesta’s email was sent short after the referendum of 5. July 2015, in which 61% of Greeks voted against a new austerity package. Tsipras ignored the referendum result – in fact, the will of the Greek people – and signed a new bailout deal with the European lenders on 13. July 2015..
It is not clear, if Bill called Alexis and put pressure on him to sign the deal, but fact is Tsipras was invited as a guest at the Clinton Global Initiative annual meeting on 28. September 2015 in New York. At the meeting where Tsipras and Clinton stood in Q&A, the Greek PM vowed to improve conditions for investment in Greece.
John Podesta is the Chairman of the 2016 Hillary Clinton presidential campaign. Podesta previously served as Chief of Staff to President Bill Clinton and Counselor to President Barack Obama.
Wikileaks started to publish thousands of Podesta’s emails in the last hours, the Hillary’s Campaign Chief blamed Russian spies for hacking his emails to “sway elections” in the USA.
