Far-right Migration Minister Francken to withdraw Belgian asylum experts from Greece’s islands

Belgium plans to immediately withdraw the experts that has sent to the Greek islands to assist in registration and identification of refugees. According to  the Flemish daily De Standaard,  the Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration and member of the far-right N-VA party, Theo Francken, has allegedly decided for the immediate withdrawal claiming the physical integrity of the personnel was at risk.

Under the title “Francken gets back the asylum experts deployed in Greece,” De Standaard reports that since last week the dozens of Belgian asylum experts have been asked to return to Belgium because the situation in the Greek islands goes “from bad to worse.”

According to the daily, in a letter to Greek Migration Minister Yannis Mouzalas, Francken expessed the fear that “it is a matter of time until one of the experts gets seriously injured, something that has to be avoided at all cost.”

For this reason, the Belgian Migration Minister requested additional police force, a security plan and transfer of the offices in order to protect the asylum experts.

The daily does not report about Mouzalas’ reply.

PS it is true that refugees and migrants in the islands hot spots occasionally riot and set tents and mobile units on fire. But I also want to see their letter of complains to Francken.

  1. No problem. Greece can send them directly to Belgium where these little fascist politicians can handle the asylum claims in their own country.
