Seamen Federation ends strike on Sat, Dec 10/2016

The Greek Seamen Federation (PNO) decided with 10:4 votes to end the strike on Saturday morning. Ferry boats and ships will operate as usual – however at first with some modifications.

The PNO said, however, that the problems have not been solved and that there may be similar actions in the future.

The government assured them in written form that there will be no taxation hikes for seamen and sailors.

Maritime Minister Panagiotis Kouroublis greeted the end of strike saying “logic prevailed.”

Τhe first ferry loaded with agricultural products left the port of Souda at 11 am Saturday.

The PNO decision comes hours after hundreds of angry farmers attacked striking seamen at the port of Heraklion, Crete, and even set offices on fire.

The 9-day seamen strike has led to shortages of basic goods in the islands that are cut-off from the mainland when marine traffic is halted.
