Policeman injured at shooting outside political party in downtown Athens

One riot police officer was wounded after shots were fired outside the offices of PASOK in downtown Athens. According to media, one or two gunmen opened fire at a police bus outside the headquarters of Pan-Hellenic Socialist Movement at Charilaou Trikoupi street very close to Exarchia – a districts of Athens where anarchist groups frequently clash with police.

The shooting took place at 6:18 a.m. on Tuesday, shot after change of shift at 6:00.

Two bullets went through the windows of the police bus, one through the window of a shop next door.

The policeman was injured in the thigh. He was transferred to the military hospital in Athens. Police said the officer’s injuries were not life-threatening but gave no other details of his condition.

So far there has been no claim of responsibility for the attack that occurred a couple of days after the arrest of Pola Roupa, a fugitive member of far-left militant group Revolutionary Struggle.

  1. Trikoupi is not “close to Exarcheia”: it is well within Exarcheia! (Just not that near to Stournari Street and the actual Square)
