Imia – Greek President calls on Turkey to respect the borders of Greece and Europe

“I want to tell to friend and neighbor Turkey that it should respect history, friendship and good-neighborliness. It’s not enough to say that we are friends, but you have to prove this friendship, ” President Prokopis Pavlopoulos said during an interview to Portuguese APTP TV.

“Today’s violation [of Greek territorial waters] was very serious because Turkey not only violated the Greek maritime borders but also the borders of Europe. The Treaty of Lausanne was violated” the Greek President said who is on an official visit to Portugal.

“I hope that there will be no repetition in the future because this will have consequences not only for the bilateral relations but also for Turkey’s relations with Europe,” Pavlopoulos concluded.

Sunday morning Turkey sent a gunboat with the Chief of General Staff on board to violate the Greek territorial waters and sail around the disputed islet of Imia.

It was provocation on highest level.
