Trump: The Big Boy in Oval Office admits he shared security information with Russia

US President Donald Trump has once again found himself at the center of a storm – this time for reportedly sharing “codeword classified” information with the Russian ambassador. The information, which related to the use of laptops on aircraft, is understood to have been passed to the Americans by an ally who had apparently chosen not to share it with Moscow.

It was marked “codeword classified”, and was highly sensitive.

Mr Trump has now defended his “absolute right” to tell the Russians “acts pertaining to terrorism and airline safety” and wanted Tussia to do more against the Islamic State.

In his tweet early on Tuesday, Mr Trump said:

And a little later…

Trumps admits the fact, just hours after US National Security Advisor H.R McMaster to9ld reporters on Monday:

“I was in the room, it didn’t happen”

He met Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in the Oval Office last week.

US media said Mr Trump had shared material that was passed on by a partner which had not given permission.

A report in the Washington Post said Mr Trump had confided top secret information relating to an IS plot thought to centre on the use of laptop computers on aircraft.

Mr Trump’s move is not illegal, as the US president has the authority to declassify information.

However, the action drew strong criticism from Democrats and a call for an explanation from his own Republican party.

And one senior Nato diplomat quoted by Reuters said: “If true, this is not going to instil confidence in allies already wary of sharing the most sensitive information.”

In a conversation with the Russian foreign minister and Russian Ambassador Sergei Kislyak in the Oval Office, the president revealed details that could lead to the exposure of a source of information, officials told the Washington Post.

Now the world is cautious about what secrets to share with Washington.

Can President Trump share to secret information?

According to an executive order signed by Barack Obama in 2009, something is considered classified if “the national defence has required that certain information be maintained in confidence in order to protect our citizens, our democratic institutions, our homeland security, and our interactions with foreign nations”.

Once it is classified, the sharing of that material could lead to prosecution. However, there is no law against it. – More on this issue on BBC.
