Police arrests Greeks, Germans and Italians over free camping in Crete

Police authorities in the Rethymnon prefecture arrested several Greeks, German and Italian nationals over free camping in a protected NATURA area.

In a big operation in the Koyrtaliotiko Gorge and Preveli lake in Agios Vassileios Municipality, police arrested 11 Greeks aged 25-54, and four foreigners from Germany and Italy aged 36-42.

According to authorities the arrested had illegally camp in NATURA protected areas.

Furthermore, extra charges were raised against the 54-year-old Greek for procession of a small quantity of hashish.

During the operation, police discovered in the broader area a special designed area where four hashish seedlings were cultivated. “The seedlings were two-meter high,” local media report.

Authorities say that controls will convenient across the whole region of Crete with the aim to keep the legality and the proper functioning of tourist destinations on the island.
