The former director of Henry Dunant hospital and ex head of Greek Red Cross, Andreas Martinis, was released from custody after 15 months.
The corruption prosecutor has ordered his release for ‘health reasons’.
Martinis is not allowed to leave the country and has to report to police station twice a month.
His first appeal to be released was rejected by the Judicial Council. His second request was submitted on July 31st and accepted because officially certified with disability of more than 75%.
Andreas Martinis, 75, and his wife Georgia were arrested in May 2016 by order of corruption prosecutor and were accused of embezzling millions of euros and money laundering. He was also arrested in 2013 over hospital arrears to the IKA social security fund.
He testified in the Parliamentary Commission investigating financial scandals in the health sector 1997-2014. He named officials of New Democracy and PASOK as responsible for the plan for the sale off of the Dunant hospital.
He had also testified at a hearing over his alleged provision of free medical care to prominent and wealthy people.
The allegations refer to the period from 2007 to 2010 when Andreas Martinis was a director at the Henry Dunant Hospital in northern Athens. He was already in prison for a case involving alleged kickbacks he received back in 1998 from a German company, and money laundering, while running the hospital.
According to the case file, Martinis secured free healthcare for 51 people, including former premiers and their relatives, former ministers, deputies, artists and journalists. Prosecuting attorneys claim the hospital incurred a loss of almost 22 million euros.
PS Now this bunch of the usual mean Greeks comment that after ex defense minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos and ex Thessaloniki mayor Papageorgopoulos also Martinis is at home. I have no idea what they imply when they write something like that…
