A video showing a small truck dragging a dog on a road in Peloponnese outraged animal lovers in Greece. The truck owner keeps driving, while the body of the poor animal tied on the truck is being dragged on the rough asphalt of the land road. The dog dies a torture death.
The video was shot by another driver who sent it to local media tempo24.gr. The horrible abuse took place on Oct 31, the man was arrested on Nov 2.
Animal lovers lash out at the truck driver but also at the driver who shot the almost one-minute long video without doing anything to stop the animal abuse.
The video was shot at the Mega Spilaio – Kalavryta road, the blood traces of the poor dog could be seen in a quite long distance, websites dealing with animal issues report.
According to some local media, the eye witness managed to stop the truck driver and allegedly threatened to file a law suit against him for torturing an animal. The driver continued his journey, though.
However, animal issues website zoosos.gr, the eye witness had not filed against the truck driver, neither had he stopped him.
Nevertheless, as animal abuse is a felony and the issue received a huge publicity, the local prosecutor intervened. Within hours, the truck driver was apprehended by men of the police station in Kalavryta.
He claimed that he loved his dog who had fallen from the truck and that he had not realized that.
When policemen asked him where was the body of the dog, he claimed he had buried him at the side of the road.
He was arrested and taken to prosecutor of Kalavryta on Thursday morning. The truck driver, who is reportedly “elderly”, repeated the same story adding that he had hearing problems and he therefore did not realize he was dragging the dog.
The judge accepted the dog owner’s story, the eye witness did not appear at the court, neither had he filed a law suit. The judge declared the truck driver “innocent” for animal abuse.
A truck driver with such hearing problems that he cannot hear the horrifying howling of a dying dog? A driver who keeps driving over a distance of several kilometers without dropping even a short glance on the back mirror? A man who claims that he loved his dog but he used to carry him often on the back of the truck and thus tied and repeatedly exposing him to dangers that ultimately cost him his life?
Exposing an animal to danger is also an offense according to the Greek Animal Protection Law.
A man claiming to suffer from such hearing impairment is dangerous not only to animals but also to other drivers and pedestrians.
The judge should have at least deprived him of this driving license forever.
I do not know but I do hope that some Greek animal welfare society can still file a law suit against the truck driver.
