Thousands of Athenians flocked to Thiseio area in downtown to celebrate the New Year together with the Mayor of Athens and an rich entertainment program.
Midnight sharp, the sky illuminated with numerous fireworks that offered a spectacular view to young and old.
“Athens sends a message of hope to Greece and the whole world,” Mayor Giorgos Kaminis said and stressed that “Athens is an open city that is not afraid of diversity.”
On his New Year message, Prime Minster Alexis Tsipras said “2018 will be a good year for the country and the people” because Greece will exit the fiscal adjustment programs.
“The 8-year memoranda end and with them the period of supervision, tough austerity and humiliations,” the Greek Prime Minister underlined.
Pm Tsipras and his partner welcome children for the carols on New year’s Eve.
“We leave behind the darkness,” the Prime Minister said in his New year message.
In other news from the Greek capital, on New year’s Eve, the night atmosphere was thick with smog as the residents of Athens had the fireplaces work full power in order to give the extra festive touch to the special day.
