Greece’ Copyright company: Felony charges incl for €30million embezzlement

A prosecutor on Friday charged the former head of the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Intellectual Property (HSPIP) and members of the company’s board with seven felonies including mismanagement and embezzlement of up to 30 million euros.

HSPIP is an independent body established to administrate and protect intellectual property. An audit of HSPIP’s accounts conducted in 2017 by Ernst & Young on the instructions of the ministry of culture revealed that it had retained 42.5 million euros from members and the company’s rightholders, while board members enjoyed huge salaries.

The charges, covering the period 2003-2017, were filed against HSPIP head Petros Xanthopoulos, members of his family who held positions of responsibility and executive members of the managing board, and include embezzlement, fraud, forming a criminal organization, breach of trust, tax evasion and money-laundering.

  1. the whole concept of ‘intellectual property’ is a sewer of corruption and parasitic suffocation of actual human expression, an attempt to transfer control over our culture to a handful of corporations.
The concept is entirely evil and it’s no surprise to hear that its implementation in greece is also riddled with corruption. It needs to be totally dismantled and thrown away.
