UNICEF terminates cooperation with branch in Greece due to “financial irregularities”

United Nations children aid organization UNICEF has announced it terminates cooperation with its National Chapter in Greece on suspicion of financial irregularities. In a statement, the UNICEF said an audit conducted by the UN agency revealed “financial irregularities,” but the international organization refrained from elaborating on the kind of irregularities.

According to daily Kathimerini, UNICEF officials said the organization planned to resume its operations in the country following a radical reform of the Greece-based committee. Decisions are to be finalized over the next couple of months.

In the statement issued Thursday midnight, UNICEF said it will continue to support refugees and migrants children and this aid program is supported by the agency’s Europe and Central Asia office in cooperation with the Greek government and non-governmental organizations.

The decision to terminate cooperation goes into effect as of 19. April 2018, midnight.

Now Greeks on social media are wondering about what they call a “scandal” and a “shame”.
