A powerful rainstorm flooded streets, houses and businesses in Thessaloniki, caused cut of water supply. Farmers and breeders in Peloponnese are in despair due loss of farming animals and flooded agricultural land.
Torrential rain flooded the city of Thessaloniki in Northern Greece on Monday and had water supply cut in households and businesses in the city center. The rainstorm started in the east of the city short after 3 o’ clock Monday afternoon and moved quickly to the west. It was short and powerful and had main roads turned into rivers and lakes within minutes. Motorists were trapped inside their vehicles, traffic jams occurred across the city.
Shops were flooded and residents did what they could to keep the water away.
Traffic was halted when a tree fell on a vehicle.
Rain and wind swept away dozens of pots full of plants and flowers at the Flower exhibition in the city center.
The Water Company of Thessaloniki informs the public the problem is expected to be solved by 9:30 in the evening.
The local Fire Service received more than 30 calls to pump waters.
Peloponnese
Torrential rains also hit south Peloponnese and set hundreds of acres under water and drowned dozens of farming animals.
Mostly hit are the areas of Strefi, Karoutes and Lanztoi in Ilia, where several houses have been flooded, and even a train tracks was demolished.
The areas hit by the floods are to apply for declare “state of emergency.”
Heavy rain- and thunderstorms have been striking Greece in recent days. Streets turned into rivers in Greek capital Athens and Vassiliki in south Lefkada in Ionian Sea were set under water on Sunday.
Greece’s National Meteorology Service has warned of more rain- and thunderstorms until May 9th the earliest.
