Dementia sufferer murders 77-year-old wife in their home in Athens

An 80-year-old man has killed his wife in their home in the district of Agios Panteleimonas in Athens. The victim was found by her son on Thursday morning. Police found that the woman was beaten on the face and the head with fists as wells as with the TV remote control and later suffocated with a pillow.

Investigation found no traces of  violation of the doors or windows of the apartment, and set to seek for the woman’s partner with whom she has been living with for the last five years.

The man was located several hours later wandering around with blood on his clothes. He was arrested and taken to police station.

Then a tragedy was revealed. The man has been suffering from dementia. He was not in position to tell anything to police about the murder which he seemed to be unable to remember. Neither was he able to tell officers who he was.

The victim’s son described the man as a “quiet and serious personality.”

The two met each other several years ago and decided to move together in order to provide each other with “company and support.”

The first signs of dementia developed about a year ago. Not long time ago, the man had left the house wearing his pajamas. He was found two hours later wandering in the streets of Athens.

Following the man’s arrest, a psychiatrist diagnosed that he was suffering from a severe form of dementia and ordered his transfer to a psychiatric facility.

It is not clear whether the man was receiving medication for dementia or not.
