One dead, 3 injured as car crashes into bus stop in Athens

A man was killed and three people, including a 10-year-old girl, were injured when a car crashed at a bus station in Metamorfosi suburb of West Athens on Wednesday morning. The 78-year-old man died on the spot, after suffering fatal injuries and was trapped between the car and a power column. The man was not waiting for the bus but has doing his morning rounds as every day. He just happened to cross the street when the car crashed at the bus stop  at 8:20 in the morning.

Injured are the 40-year-old car driver and his 10-year-old daughter. They were pulled from the car from passerby who rushed to the spot when they heard a big noise. Both the father and the daughter are reported slightly injured and in the hospital.

One more elderly man was slightly injured. The 80-year-old was siting on a bench waiting for the bus. He told media “Was I be sitting on the other side of the bench, I would be dead too.”

Citing traffic police sources, media report that the driver seem to had lost control of the car he was driving at a speed. Blood and urine samples have been taken to determined whether the man was under the influence of alcohol or substances.

The girl was reportedly not wearing a seat belt.

A day later, media report, police estimates high speed and worn out tires were the reasons for the crash. the girl reportedly said “we were late to school and the father was driving fast.”
