“Skopje not ready for an agreement yet,” says Greek gov’t official

The government in Skopje is not ready yet for a solution in the Macedonia name issue, a Greek government official said Friday afternoon. The official who spoke on conditions of anonymity said “it is the government in Skopje that is not ready, in the present phase, to proceed with a preliminary draft agreement ironed out by the two countries’ foreign ministers in Brussels over the past week.”

“Therefore the possibility of an agreement in the next few days seems to move away,” the official said adding that also the possibility of a telephone conversations between Prime Minister, Alexis Tsipras, and his FYROM counterpart, Zoran Zaef, moves away.

Earlier on Friday, government spokesman, Dimitris Tzanakopoulos, had reiterated Greece’s position saying “without erga omnes and Constitutional changes there is no agreement.”

The news dampens expectations of the last days that the agreement on Macedonia name issue was imminent.
