Greek Parliament honors Athens Pride 2018 with rainbow colors

A smart part of the Greek Parliament was lit up in rainbow colors on Saturday night to honor Athens Pride 2018. It was a symbolic move with the aim to pass the message of ‘respect diversity and human rights’ to the citizens. The lighting followed an initiative by Parliament Speaker, Nikos Voutsis (SYRIZA).

Thousands of people marched in the streets of Athens during the annual Parade organized by LGBTOI activists on Saturday.

Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis said that the city of Athens is determined against the fascism of homophobia and bogotry.

Diplomats from 32 countries supported the Athens Pride, some also marched on Saturday.

Addressing the crowd, government spokesman, Dimitris Tzanakopoulos, said the government was working towards recognition of marriage between same-sex people as well as the possibility that such couples can adopt children.

Among the many Athens Pride stands n downtown Athens was also one set by the “Police action for the human rights.”

Last week, 20 SYRIZa MPs submitted a question to Interior Ministry asking to allow transgender people into Police Academies. In terms and conditions for Police Academies it is mentioned among others that those “suffering from mental health issues like psycho-sexual disorders such as sex identity disorder” are excluded from attending the Academy. The lawmakers said that this violates the relevant legislation that forbids discrimination at work places due to sexual identity.
