Space AgroBox: Two Greek students to deliver fresh food in space

Are you an astronaut bored of frozen hamburgers and pizza? Two Greek students have the solution for you: the “Space Agrobox”!  The kit supplies gourmet astronauts with fresh food the gASTROnoms can grow in space.

PhD student Avgoustinos Pantazidis and pre-PhD Maria Kontogianni at the Agricultural University of Athens invented the tool that will allow spacemen and -women to grow their own fresh food of high nutritional quality and value.

“In a specially designed capsule it is possible to cultivate microgreens in microgravity conditions, making optimal use of the available volume,” Pantazidis and Kontogianni told state news agency amna.

“In order to find a solution to this, we had to respond to several practical questions during the development of the idea, which were related both to the particularities that appear in the microbial conditions and to the cost management of the gradual development of a product,” the students added.

The Space AgroBox could potentially expand human staying in space and increase the duration of space mission, while paving the way for the first steps towards settlement, for example in a Lunar Village.

Team “gASTROnomy” as the student call themselves is candidate for four more special prizes like  AIRBUS Innovation Prize, Women Entrepreneurship Award, Space for Humanity, Be A New Space Actor, ESA: SPACE EXPLORATION.

This particular project was presented for the first time in the “Act in Space” national space contest held in late May and won the third place.

The contest is organized by the European Space Agency (ESA), the French Space Agency (CNES) and ESA BIC Sud France, while international sponsors include Airbus Defense and Space Air Zero G, CLS , GSA, EBAN, Invivo, Qwant, FabSpace, Invest In Toulouse, Copernicus Masters and Toulouse Business School.
