Parliament lifts immunity of Deputy FM and one SYRIZA MP

The Greek Parliament voted in favor to lift the immunity of deputy Foreign Minister, Giorgos Katrougalos, and of Giannis Stefos, lawmaker from the ruling party SYRIZA. The Palriament voted against the lifting of immunity of one lawmaker of New Democracy and one from PASOK.

Katrougalos 174 Yes, 7 No

Stefos 175 Yes, 3 No

The case of Kathrougalos refers to breach of duty towards the Greek State for an amount of more than 500,000 euros. The offense was reportedly committed in the period 2010-2012. the deputy FM had reportedly asked for lifting of his immunity saying that the case refers to several professors at the University of  Thrace.

The offense for Stefos is manslaughter. The SYRIZA MP has also asked for the lifting of his immunity, saying “there must be finally an end to the case for which he has been found innocent in the civil courts.”

The case of Vaggelis Meimarakis (ND) concerned investigation after a citizen filed against him claiming offense of “breach of duty” during the period he was Parliament Speaker.

As for Giannis Loverdos (PASOK) the case concerned an offense with regards to state secrets and especially the leakage of a classified document form the Defense Department.
