Greece grants political asylum to 3. Turkish serviceman

One more Turkish officer was granted political asylum by Greek Asylum authorities on Thursday. He is the third out of the eight Turkish officers who fled to Greece after the failed coup in July 2016.

With an unanimous decision the Secondary Asylum Committee to grant political asylum to Ugur Ucan.

The Asylum Committee is expected to gradually grant asylum to the remaining 5 Turkish officers. Granting of asylum is a prerequisite for issuing travel documents to Turkish officers.

They have all expressed their intention to leave Greece.

Turkey has often slammed Greece for granting asylum and rejecting extradition requests claiming that Greece is effectively “protecting terrorists.”
