Fire destroys historical building of War Museum in Chania (videos)

A fire broke out in the historic building of the Italian military barracks in the center of Chania, Crete,  short after 9:30 Sunday night. The fire spread very quickly and went out of control despite the firefighters’ mobilization and efforts.

The building that used to house the War Museum seems to have been completely destroyed.

The fire erupted under for the moment unspecified conditions and quickly took large dimensions

Parts of the building collapsed while the fire fighting operation was in full progress in the eastern wing of the complex.

It seems that firefighters managed to prevent that the blaze would spread to the garden and the park in the back of the building.

Local zarpanews reports that that power supply was cut to prevent even even big destruction in the area.

The smoke and the flames were visible from many districts of Chania, even several kilometers away.

The roads around the building were closed to traffic, caused traffic jams in the area and gave the sense of a chaos.

According to local media flashnews, firefighters pulled out of the burning building one person who then attempted to re-enter despite the blaze. The person claimed he was living there, but was eventually detained by the police.

It is suggested that the fire was caused by people had managed to enter the otherwise sealed building using it as housing facility.

The Mayor of Chania Tassos Vamvoukas told media that the Municipality has been trying for the last two years to acquire the historical building from the Ministry of Defense with the aim to house the City Hall.

All exhibition items of the War Museum were transferred to the Greek capital long time ago.
