With temperatures reaching 40 degrees Celsius majority of Athenians are either under the beach umbrellas or the air-conditioner at home. However, tourists think they have to fulfill their sight seeing program and dare climb at the Sacred Rock of the Acropolis under the boiling early afternoon sun.
In order to protect both the visitors and the personnel from unpleasant surprises like a heat stroke, the Greek Culture Ministry decided on Sunday to close the archaeological site of Acropolis much earlier than 8 o’ clock in the evening.
The same protective measure is to be taken also on Monday, 23. July 2018, for the same reason.
Due to the heat wave and for the protection of visitors and personnel and according to labor laws the archaeological site of Acropolis and the Dionyssos Theater are closing today, Sunday, 22. July 2018, and Monday, 23. July 2018, at 2:00 o’ clock in the afternoon, the ministry said in a statement uploaded on it website.
Visitors who have purchased admission tickets online, are kindly requested to seek the ticket issuing posts and exchange their tickets to other dates, the ministry said.
According to Alpha TV, admission to Acropolis is until 1:30 on Monday.
Temperatures recorded in downtown Athens on Sunday were 36 – 37 Celsius.
Meteorologists forecast for Monday 38° Celsius in the shade at the peak of the day at 3:00 p.m.
