Extensive blackout in downtown Athens and suburbs, dozens trapped in elevators

An extensive blackout in downtown Athens as well as in several suburbs in the South and the North of the Greek capital, in Piraeus and areas in Eats Attica has caused massive problems especially in traffic, in electrified public transport means, while dozens of people are trapped in elevators.

It was short after 2 o’ clock Wednesday noon when traffic lights went out and problems were caused also in public transport means like the Metro and the Tram around Syntagma Square.

Metro Line 2 was evacuated as there are problems in the section between <Panepistimio> and <Elliniko>.

So far the Fire Service has received more than 100 calls to evacuate people trapped in elevators.

Also the headquarters of Greek Public Power Company (DEH) in Halkokondyli street near Omonia Square were reportedly without electricity.

Power outage Metro station <Syntagma>

The power outage occurred due to a problem in the main power line Agios Stefanos – Pallini, specifically in the high voltage network in Pallini.

Some media report that the problem occurred when the PPC tried to restore power supply in the fire-stricken area of Mati and surrounding areas.

According to media, power outages have occurred in downtown Athens, Irakleio, Kaisariani, Gerakas, Gyzi, Neos Kosmos, Dafni, Ilioupoli, Karea, Nea Smyrni, Alimo, Argyroupoli, Papagou, Neo Falimor, Melissia, Vyronas, Pallini, Porto Rafti, Ilisia, Nea Elvetia, Halandri, Brilissia, Kifissia, Pagrati, Agios Dimitrios and Piraeus.

According to latest information, the power supply has slowly started to be restored in a few areas and is gradually restored in the Metro Line 2.

It is not clear when the problem will be solved.

Citing PPC sources, media report that problem will be solved in an hour, that is around 4 o’ clock p.m.
