German Chancellor Angela Merkel is going to visit capital of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia Skopje on 8 September. Merkel’s visit coincides with the FYROM’s Independence Day.
Prime Minister Zoran Zaev was apparently surprised by the news and said that he hoped that Meriel would arrive on Saturday in Skopje, yet, he noted that the visit must be confirmed first by the German government.
The issue was quickly solved, when German government spokesman Steffen Seibert, officially announced the visit.
Merkel is expected to discuss regional development and bilateral issues with Prime Minister Zaev.
The Chancellor want to get first-hand account on the environment ahead of the Referendum, Seibert said.
The visit takes place three weeks before the referendum on Greece-Macedonia name agreement.
PS I hope Merkel won’t address FYROMians with “dear Macedonians…”
