Torrential rainfalls and heavy lightning created a series of problems on the island of Crete and have the Samaria gorge to be closed for a day.
The famous Samaria gorge will remain closed on Friday, Sept 14th 2018, due to serious damages caused by severe weather conditions a day earlier, Chania Forestry Directorate announced on Thursday.
The prefecture of Chania was especially hit by the weather phenomena.
Rainfall in Samara gorge reached 39mm, in the city of Chania 48mm and in Akrotiri 70mm, while in Tzermiado, Lasithi reached 60mm.
Several traffic accidents occurred during the rainfall. On the highway Herakleio-Rethymno, a German tourist lost control of his vehicle that overturned. He was helped out by other motorists.
In Nea Chora the first rainfall of autumn caused heavy damages to the main road that was under re-construction.
According to zarpanews, mud and stones were swept away and even entered shops along the road.
A lightning in Ano Chersonisso caused damages to three houses.
Electrical appliances in two of houses were damaged by the electromagnetic power, reports nea kriti.
Despite the problems the weather caused to agricultural land, many welcomed the water on the island that had suffered from an extended period without rains.
Meteorologists forecast clouds in the morning and rather fair weather as of the afternoon across Crete, however, possible heavy rainfalls in Lasithi prefecture on Friday afternoon.
The weather on the island is expected to gradually improve.
