The US State Department has urged Turkey to refrain from increasing tension in the East Mediterranean Sea. Commenting on the upcoming drilling off Cyprus, the Department of State said that it discourages any rhetorical action and rhetoric in the region and reminded that US policy on the Cyprus EEZ is longstanding and has not changed.
On Tuesday, Ankara issued a NAVTEX for seismic research vessel R/V Barbaros from 18. October 2018 until 1. February 2019. Hours earlier Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu had sad that nobody can stop Turkey from continuing gad drilling in East Mediterranean Sea.
The US Department of State said further that the US continues to support the equal distribution of oil and gas resources among the two communities in Cyprus in the context of a broader settlement” of the Cyprus issue.
The comments came just hours before Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited Ankara for meetings with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and other officials.
However, the Cyprus EEZ is hardly believed to be on Pompeo’s agenda who flew to the Turkish capital after a short visit and even shorter talks with Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman over the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi.
The Washington Post journalist with both Saudi and US nationality went missing since entering the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul on Oct. 2. All signs point out that Kashoggi was brutally murdered in the Saudi Consulate.
