Flu death toll increases in Greece by each and every day, the number of dead has reached 39 people, Greece’s Center for Disease Prevention and Control, KELLPNO, said on Thursday. 84% of the victims belonged to risk groups or were not vaccinated.
The death toll reached its peak last week when a total 20 people died.
Among the dead are 37 adults aged 25-90.
One baby younger than 12 months and a 5-year-old child are also among the victims.
The baby was born with a serious health problem irrelevant to the flu disease. It was hospitalized in Intensive Care Unit with tracheotomy.
The 5-year-old girl from Crete was suffering from pneumonia caused by staphylococcus inflection, a serious health problem.
There are currently 165 patients hospitalized in ICU due to health complications caused by the flu infection with H1N1 strain. 75% of them either belong to risk groups or were not vaccinated.
KEELPNO experts stress the need for vaccination underlining that only a small percentage of the infected cases were vaccinated.
According to experts, the flu season reaches its peak in February and March.
